As we had started exchanging opinions on the BBS about two month before, we could communicate each other smoothly. We could not only exchange interesting and important information each other and also had further discussion.

Many of participants were not familiar with BBS or even with E-mail, so the exchange on the BBS was not vigorous. However, once the real time conference started using the visual aids, vivid talks pooped out.

All the participants were sure of the future development of our exchange programs via the digital networks.

[KJEP's Comment]

Thanks to Mr. John Jin at In-Kwon Educational Foundation, I could get acquainted with three doctors from three universities, Dongguk University, Sookmyung Women's University and Yonsei University (alphabetical order) in September, 1998. We started this exchange program via the Internet. We began self-introduction and some discussions using the BBS on the Web Page.

Our first purpose is to promote the individual communication between students from Korea and Japan via the Internet in order to have a better understanding of each other's differences and similarities as a student. The second purpose is to improve our skill in communication in our second language, English. Lastly, we would like to investigate the effect of using the Internet in our intercultural communication and education.

Below is my translation of KGU newsletter reporting KJEP. (Summarized in half.)

Video Conferencing Between Korean Universities and KGU

Graduate students tried an experimental video conference between Korean universities and KGU on November 27. They started this project, named Korea and Japan Internet Exchange Program (KJEP), in late September. Three universities from Korea, Dongguk University, Suk-Myoung Women's University and Yonsei University joined this project and Teleclass International Japan, the non-profit educational organization, supported it.

The conferencing consisted of two sessions, the morning one was via the international ISDN and the afternoon one was via the Internet using CU-SeeMe. Once the line connected, the right 100-inch screen showed the image of the Korean side and the left one showed that of the Japanese side. Their communication was all in English.

Dr. Rii said that it was a historical event that they started their exchange program via the digital network and held a video conference. Dr. Fujii mentioned that they could have better communication from the view point of mutual understanding of cross cultural matters.

They lively exchanged their opinions on several topics, such as the reformation of entrance examination systems, reconstruction of curriculums and the utilization of the Internet in education. They illustrated their points with various visual aids, such as diagrams, graphs and photos.

Forty under graduates from KGU joined in the afternoon session. This connection was via the Internet directly to Suk-Myoung Women's University. Three graduate students from the Department of Computer Science at Suk-Myoung Women's University and seven of KGU graduates discussed mainly using the CU-SeeMe chatting board. Dr. Choe from Suk-Myoung W. Univ. stated that there might be common educational problems to be considered in both countries, but that young promising students would make the situation better.

The officials from the Ministry of Education visited KGU on the day and commented they were impressed with the first trial of conferencing among graduates between Korean universities and KGU.
