Dear Y,

Thank you for responding to my e-mail. I feel that discussing "losing biodiversity" would be very interesting. I would like to hear some of your opinions about this matter. Same sex marriages would also be an interesting topic to discuss. I believe someone in my class would be talking about same sex marriages. I would like to know what topic you will be discussing? During the conference I will be be talking about how the lose of biodiversity would affect the planet and our future. I will also be giving examples by showing you pictures of a once endangered bird in Hawaii called the Nene and other animals and plants that are endangered because of human and environmental impact. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Sincerely,

D C. G

Dear R,

Hello! Wow, I can't wait for our next conference. It's about a week away. My topic about the coming of the year of 2000 is very important. The year 2000 is not programmed in the world's computers, because of this people won't be able to pay bills, banks and the government will stop working properly and other things will get messed up. There will be total chaos. This will happen because everything now depends upon computers. To show this I will be presenting current studies, pictures, and what people will think will happen when the year of 2000 arrives. Your topic sounds interesting. My friend Daphne is also doing one similar to your's. Is there a lot of endangered species in Japan? In America our national bird, the bald eagle, is endangered. I think the monkeys in Nagano are really cute. Are they endangered? Your topic is really important. It makes you feel sad when an animal becomes extinct. Please ask me any questions you'd like at the conference. Bye!

Your Enthusiastic Friend,

L. S

Dear A,

Hello! I'm writing to you about the video conference again. So, how did you like my topic? Teen pregnancy is a real big issue today. One of my guy friends has gotten his girlfriend pregnant and that is why I feel so strongly about this topic. At the conference I will tell you why so many teens are getting pregnant. One reason is that they don't use birth control. Another reason is that the girls think they need someone to love and they believe the baby can fill that place. At the conference, I will also tell you what happens to the babies after they are born. Some of them are given are given up for abortion and others are not. Sometimes, the teen's parents will take care of the baby for her. I think that one of the biggest problems about teen pregnancy is that some of the girls drop out of school and they miss out education. I'm forward to addressing these issues at the video conference.

Sincerely,

M .A

Dear S,

Aloha! I hope that you are doing well. The topic that I will be talking about is racial discrimination against Asian-Americans. Although America is a very multi-racial country, there is still discrimination against some cultures, like the Japanese. Are there many different ethnicities living in Japan? I understand that you are new and you have never been to a video conference before. I think they are very fun and you'll enjoy it. You will learn a lot. I'm so glad that you want to visit Hawaii. I was born and raised here. It is my "Paradise". Did you know that many Japanese foods are in Hawaiian culture today? We eat musubi, but have changed it to"spammusubi" by putting a slice of cooked spam between the rice. The Hawaiian version of sashimi is called "poke". We put shoyu, onions, and sometimes seaweed. Japanese culture is a large part of Hawaiian culture. But Hawaii still has some unique foods like poi, pounded raw taro root mixed with water.

I will try to tell you more about Hawaii through our letters, but I can only write so much. Hopefully you can visit and see for yourself how much out cultures are alike. I'll see you at the conference.

Mahalo,

L. B

Dear S,

I've been searching a lot about the latest about our economy here in Hawaii. It will be a very interesting topic because Hawaii and Japan are facing the same problem. But economist in Hawaii say our economy hould get better in 6 months or one year. The reason they said that is because in November, 1998, Hawaii will be voting on a new governor. There has been a lot of blame set on politicians for not running the state money very well. Also, we hope for tourism to increase because Hawaii has been exposed around the world in the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant. I hope to hear soon about Japan's latest economy. Please tell me about your topic.

Always,

F.D

from Kristin to Hawaii.

Thank you for your letters. I am sorry for the delay. I did receive your email about the time etc. . .but Maeda sensei said he spoke to Yoko on the phone and I got the impression that "everything" was confirmed so I did not reply by mail. Sorry. Who is on first? The 10:30 Kobe / 3:30 Hawaii time will be just fine. Whatever is most convenient for you. I was told that Yoko will arrive at Fukiai at 9:30 am on Saturday, Kobe time, to set up. That is perfect. I will be in the teachers' room waiting for you. Carol, thank you also for your students' letters with discussion topics. They sound fabulous. We spent the last class going over your students' letters and reconsidering ours; the topics we had chosen before were a bit "light" in comparison. Some alterations were made. The following letters were quickly written at the end of the class. Hopefully this will give you an idea of the topics emerging from this side. I told my kids that the Kobe keypal of the speaker from Hawaii was to lead questions at the conference and before too, by email, for that matter. Hopefully their inquiry letters will come to me today and I can send them to you.

From E and Y

Hello! I am looking forward to seeing you in the next TV conference. Our topic is same-sex marriage. I am learning this topic in Foreign Affairs class. It is difficult for us to learn this because there aren't same-sex marriages in Japan. We want to make a presentation about children of same-sex couples. We want to talk about how we think they would feel and the social influence this would have. We watched a documentary about this topic. After, we watched a video. We were a little shocked because it was different from our thought. So, we want to know about children of same-sex couples more and more. And we want to know the real situation in Hawaii. So please tell us! Questions--

1. Are there children of same-sex couples in your school or neighborhood?

2. Do you have homosexual friends at your school?

3. We learned that there are a lot of same-sex couples in Hawaii. Is this true? What do you think about this?

We would like you to present how the people from Hawaii feel about same-sex marriage and same-sex couples. Is there discrimination against them. We want to know the details. We are looking forward to meeting you again soon!

From Y. H and R. F

We are going to talk about animal extinction in Japan. For example, "Iriomote wild cat" is in danger of becoming extinct. What do you think about it? We are so looking forward to hearing your presentation too.

From A and K

We will introduce "the female high school student in Japan." Such things as our uniforms, how they are supposed to be worn and how they are really worn. Also, we will show you loose socks, pocket bells (beepers), print club and popular daily clothes.

From M, K and Y

We will talk about teen crime.

-the comparison of the two crimes (The Sakakibara case and the Kipland Kinkel case) in terms of what happened, punishment, their ages etc. . .

-current situation of children's crimes. Graph: the change in the rate, children's crime percentage of the whole of all crimes

-the difference in the law about children--comparison of the law Other topics to be discussed are . . .

-Japanese food and snacks

-Music in Japan-both English and Japanese

We have class in another two hours and will develop this more. I will send mmmoreinformation about 4pm today Kobe time. Talk to you then. Thank you for your patience,

from Kristin

Greetings, All:

I am assuming that the below schedule is the latest work - in - progress. There are a few students' names from the Kobe side that need to be added to the general list of students: M, S (snacks), and M and S (music). Thank you. If I understand correctly, H from the Hawaii side will not be presenting. I am wondering about the discussion. There are several topics that were intended for presentations under "free discussion." I am wondering if we could not have a short discussion period after each topic discussed. I have instructed my students to make their presentations only 5 minutes long and have also assigned the Kobe keypal of the Hawaiian presenter to be in charge of facilitating questions/answers in regard to their presentations.. Students could also use the discussion time to confirm for themselves that they understood what was said.

I, personally, think we would get more discussion/sharing this way. What do you think? So this does not get too long, I will send another email with the rest of the letters that the student in charge of questions wrote to the Hawaiian students. I just received Carols fax with the script. FABULOUS! Thank you. I have not yet been able to look it over but will show it to students in class (in 15 minutes). Some of the questions my students put in their letters may have been answered with the script. If so, just ignore them. I will send them on anyway as they were already written and the Hawaiian students may enjoy receiving the mail. Biopoems will come a bit later today. I will send them on after school. Thank you to everyone for all the organizing and work you have put into this. We are excited for the event. Please let me know about the schedule. I would appreciate it.

Until later
