1, Go to the disabled facilities -To understand
that it has a difficulty- R.I
As for the first impression when it
began and went for the disabled facilities with all. Eextremely
,as for the persons mhom cere for looked happy.
However, when we heard that their relation people hardly come
up there to meet them, that it may lonely about came out.
If It was really happy, we hada adoubt whether It was not so to
be In the setablishment.(?)
2,@First contact with disabled ---K. I
It was the first time for me, to visit disabled fasility. So I
didn't know what I should do.I was embarassed. But I tried to
speak to. Then naturally, we asked "what do you really want."
She said "I want to have a friend"
We are surprised .I was really shacked because her family did
not often visit her . And the disabied facility has a good equipment
and couvenient to live in. But I'm sure she miss her family very
much. I hope her family visit her if they come can't live with
her.
3, Talk with Ms. Kuroki ~ To know the real intention~ ----------A.
T
I went for the unabled facilities, and tried to speak to Ms. Kuroki
who was a handicapped person's caseworker.
Then, it found out what wasn't known until now.She said that it
is parents came for a little child's having spoken to be unpleasant
by the response in the town. It is that the talken together with
one child in the oppoiste direction to be happy.
It was a thing with the very inconvinient place for the handicapped
person when it went out to the town as we expected it. And though
it tended to think the one with the difficulty only a car chair,
it was said that you had ti make the thing adapted to not only
a car chair but also a stick and the various people. It got the
following message from Ms. Kuroda. From now, it wants to be here
more the handicapped person it thinks of important its person's
thing.(?)
Then, proceed from yourself, and it is important is speak first
from the greeting such as "Hello" if it meets the person
who has handicaps in the town. Becase it is our age, it wants
to support it 21 ceturies with us.
4,Impression of riding on the wheelchair-To
appreciate unabled poeple's conditions-----------Y. K
I thought it must be comfortable, because we just sit on the wheelchair
without doing anything. But, I was scared to try a ride on weelchair.
I had to opposite direction ride on wheelchair the slope. I thought
hard to ride person who wove the wheelchair. Dangerons to traffic
is heavy. I want to increase barrier-free, because a few barrier-free
in our town, Tamana.
5,The field investigation-The equipment for
the public facilities of our town------------N. F
Being surprising, though anyone was about to be used, there were
no equipment for unabled person in the municipal office, therfore
there were only stairs. It was improper with the car chair in
up from the second floor. In the library and the store, The one
for the person of the car chair had anentrance and there was a
rest room. And there was an elevator. It was found out that countermeasure
proceeded a little.
At the station, though there were only stairs, the one for the
person of the car chair had a big machine . However, it is that
there were not 10 people who used the machine in a year. And,
it thinks that the first person is terrible. Because it takes
time terribly to finish being raised and becomes oblique. But,
it knew that there was such a thing for the first time, and it
was surpraised.
6,The opinion poll ------------------A.Y
we asked "what do you do if it is trouble some in the town
and there is the handicapped person?"
` iproceed from your self ,and it doesjsaid answer was 1/3.
B,Other 1/3 help if other they are looked for. And C, other 1/3
help if the person ask to help.
Opinion came out.
From the result , as for us , handicapped persons must say from
themself "Please help" We think it is important to help
from us.
7, The impression of the video and the book
of Ototake -----------N. F
At first, I thought Mr. Ototake's way of thinking is different
from me. When a neighborhood stared him, He thought "You
were allowed to be born as a handicapped person." I thought
he is terrific when I heard about it. But I thought he is strong
enough. However, I read "No one's perfect (the whole body
unsatisfaction)"
I think Mr.Ototake is much more terrific than which I expected,
the neighborhood of Mr.Ototake is terrific, as well. I'm sure
their parent's needed to have a great courage. They have done
it. Then , the life of Mr. Ototake get shines. I thought it must
be terrific. And a child in the neighborhood choose is quarrel
with Mr. Ototake than to ignore him.
Now, Mr. Ototake's aim is to create "barrier free in their
mind". I agree with him.
I have ever gone shopping with the handicapped person. But I felt
the eyes of the ordinary people was very cold. In the present
society , how to create "the barrier free of the thing "is
quite easy. But I think " barrier free in our mind"
is very difficult.
However, all we can do is to create "the barrier free in
our mind" for the happiness.
8,About the Paralympics --------------M.
K
Many players participated it from Japan. It was Narita, the player,
that was most paying attention to it of that. She is a swimmer.
She won five gold medals and one silver medal.I was deeply impressed
when it saw hold the player defeated last time when Narita, the
player, took a world record and won the championship each other.Practice
is restricted to one hour after Narita, the player, is sick and
the foot of the spinal cord is uncomfortable, too. She say"if
swimming was taken from me, nothing was left"and continued
the practice . She won many world records and a medal as a result.I
saw the state that a player with the difficulty was swimming very
hard, and I was thought terrific.
9,Conclusion 1-About the thing that it has
a handicap -----------M. S
Regard with these thingCwe think it depends on the person wheather
they feel happy or not. I think disabled is not unhappy. There
is a person who spends gloomy life wheather one is disabled or
not. Taking account of ather opinion. We thought we humman beings
are equal.
10,Conclusion 2 -------------------------M. O
I thought what would happen if a person like Mr. Ototake was in
our schooland the town . First it must be inconvinient. We must
solve the problen of inconvinience in public buildings and public
areas. And I think both disabled and abled bodies people should
remove the barreier in their mind. Therefore , we should speak
to them first. The inderstanding of abled bodied people would
be deepened by speaking to disabled an touching them.
Then , I think the wall in our heart will be disappeared.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS PRESENTATIONS
1. S. H: Mission and historical background
Mission: To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults
with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities
to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy,
and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship
with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the ommunity.
Historical background: Not available today but student will definitely
be presenting information on this topic tomorrow.
2. J. T: Eligibility
People eligible for Special Olympics are those who are recognized
and identified as having mental retardation or closely related
limitations in general learning and adaptive skills. Participants
must also be eight years of age or older.
Learning limitations refer to the inability to understand ideas,
practical intelligence and social intelligence that creates problems
in academic learning and/or in daily life functions.
Adaptive skills limitations refer to having lack of skills in
communication, home-living, social skills, self-care, self-direction,
health and safety, functional academics, recreation/leisure, and
work.
Those who have limitations due to physical, sensory, visual impairments,
behavior disorders or emotional disturbance do not qualify.
3. C.T: Sports Events
The games are held in spring, summer and fall.
Spring season runs from mid-February through the end of May. The
events are track and field, aquatics and softball. There is also
powerlifting but athletes must be 16 years or older to participate.
The summer season starts in June throiugh the end of August. The
summer events are soccer, tennis and golf.
The fall season is from September to December. The fall events
are basketball, bowling, speed skating and figure skating.
The Special Olympics World games happen every 2 years alternating
between summer and winter. The most recent World Games was held
in North Carolina in summer 1999. 32 athletes from Hawaii won
many medals. The 2001 Winter Games will be held in Alaska and
the next Summer Games in 2003 will be held in Ireland.
4. J. H: Support
In Hawaii, the Special Olympics would not be possible without
countless hours put iin by more than 4,500 volunteers to assist
almost 2,000 athletes. Volunteers carry out roles such as officials,
coaches, board members, fundraisers, game coordinators, timekeepers
and scorekeepers.
There are about 300 coaches that needed to get a coaching certification
in order to qualify. They teach skills, arrange practicies, take
care of equipment and uniforms and act as role models, teachers,
counselors and advocates.
Family involvement is a major priority for Special Olympics. Family
members are encouraged to help coach, transport people, officiate,
chaperone, raise money and train volunteers. But most importantly,
Special Olympics recognizes that having a child with special needs
can make everyday life within the family challenging. Therefore
through paritipation in this program, family members have an opportunity
to provide entire families to be together as they share joy in
the accomplishments of their athlete as well as build a support
network with family members of other athletes.
We would like to close our presentation with the Special Olympics
motto:
"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the
attempt."
